I was mostly prepared for culture shock when I went to Spain but this was something that really blew my mind. I saw so many people begging in this way and it gutted me. It seemed so shameful, also oddly respectful in contrast to the beggars I've seen at home in New York. In New York they're everywhere and deliberately bothering you, and using humor and charisma to get your attention. But this. It really surprised me. I felt so sad for all the women I saw like this, this was so more effective and emotional than any panhandler that ever got in my face with a sob story.
